This weekend started really nice. After long
and productive week on Friday evening a group of us decided to make a picnic on
the beach. So we picked some food and drinks at the local supermarket near the
hostel and we crowded around on the beach. With the tasty food, a lot of drinks,
good music and even better weather we were the main attraction on the beach
since everybody who was passing by stared at us. Since the weather was warm,
and the nights are here really pleasant we refreshed ourselves with night
swimming. Pleasant company continued till late in the night ( or maybe better
to say early in the morning ) .
How to“ better start“ a Saturday morning then with a short walk to Piran and exploring
the city with all his beauties. Since I was never in Piran before I had not so
much expectations but I have to say that Piran is a really beautiful small town
with a lot of interesting small details (either on the houses, buildings,
churches or on the streets ). Since we
are not only tourists then also students doing some hard work here on the
Summer School we were not just exploring the city like normal tourists. The teachers from the University in Portorož
were creative and found the way how the wake us up early in the morning. We had few stations through Piran which we
had to find. But it gets even more interesting. On the spots there were waiting
on us the lovely ladies from the history of Piran which were answering on our
questions and giving us hints for solving our task.
We learned that Piran has a lot of churches (St.
Georges is the most famous one and also St. George is the patron of the city of
Piran ) . Also if you walk through the city center of Piran on several houses you
can see the lion holding an open book as a symbol of peace and closed war.
Maybe you ask yourself why lion? Well, it's because lion represented in the history
a symbol of Venice and since Piran was in the history under the Venecian
Republic that is the reason why the lion appears so often on the fronts of the buildings.
If you want to know something more about Piran, it's a fact that it's a city
offering a lot of interesting buildings, for example the Vencian house or the
Aqurium where you can find 180 different types of marine creatures. We liked a lot Piran and since in some cases
the picture is worth a thausand words I leave you with some pictures that we
took during our stay in Piran today.
Don't miss the next post tomorrow, because we
will describe the wonderful trip to the Istria Hinterland in Slovenia. It felt
like home in Croatia actually, so come and check out how the Slovenes are dealing
with the olive and wine production.
Greetings from Croatians ! :)
